The book you speak of Giants,Dwarfs and other Oddities is an interestig read- it's original title was The Mystery and Lore of Monsters.

I got that book through the British Library inter loan system. Some time later on I ordered Giants,Dwarfs and other Oddities-but it was the same as the other book with a different title. A lot of the information in Thompson's work was in an older book Giants and Dwarfs by Edward J Wood.

During the last week-I have been going through some of the stuff I collected
over the years of Giants/Giantesses/Tall People. Just the other day I found a reference to Ruth Duncan "The Magnificent Giantess" amongst other items. Okay she was not the tallest ever-but what a coincidence-I am a fan of the old time

I found this picture of Mills Darden on Johnny C website (so credit to him). I can see a 7'6 man, even though the pic is a nice piece of photographic illusion as Mills is standing much closer to the camera as the other people in the picture who are standing. Mills looks to be standing in the front row next to the seated people.
I can't really see a 1,000+ lbs man there though.

The reference you make (please read carefully) at the bottom. According to this Zeng Jinlian had a Great Grandfather of 7 ft 7-it would be interesting to find out who he was. Also the famous Chinese giant Chang -claimed to have a sister taller than himself. It would be excellent to find out more about these individuals and others who still allude us. Also I still live in hope that a photo of Ginny Bunford and other enigmatic giants and giantesses -alive in the photographic age will yet come to light.

It seems that 2 years after his admission to the hospital in Shanghai, is still living with her mother, in great poverty and poor diet. She is taking medication because of epilepsy due to previous medical interventions, with bowel problems, and problems in his ankle.
Be the world's tallest woman, does not generate any benefits? Why the Chinese government does not deal with her, even if it is a pride for them? No international society that can do that?. The Guinness world record has TV programs in all countries of the world, can´t invite her?.
This is a very hard and sad life.

Good Poker Portal! On katsu site he says that Zhao Liang was measured a couple of years ago on a tv show and found to be "only" 225 cm or 7'4.5". At that time he was claiming a height of 240 cm or 7'10.5" but noe they say he stands just under 8'1" or 246 cm:

That was one of the scenes of which I initially thought that it could be Suleiman, but then I was thinking, he doesn't look anywhere near 8 foot so it couldn't be him.

But now I'm looking at the scene again, the guy clearly has acromegalic features and indeed one of the worst cases of kyphosis that I have ever seen. At first I thought it was all fake, but if this is truly Suleiman Ali Nashnush, the years haven't been kind to him. He was only 26 years old when this movie was made.

Anonymous I don't understand Chinese anyway I have a program to translate from Chinese to English and so I can say to you that the conditions of Yao Defen are stable and she is beginning to eat as before receiving treatments. I just wanted to ask everybody what you think about Vikas Uppal real height because I'm still not convinced on it. Sometimes he looks over 8 feet sometimes he looks under but always around that mark according to me. I know the man with him in the pic I posted is listed at 5'7" and for Vikas indian media claimed 8'2.5",8'3",8'4",8'5" and 8'9". Now I also posted a pic of Bao next to his wife (who must be about 5'7" on heels in that photo) to see how a 5'7" person looks like next to a 7'9" person. After watching these two pictures I think Vikas may very well have been taller than Bao but maybe not quite 8 feet. There are also some people who are guessing for him a height of 7'10" and I think it could be close to the truth. I'd like very much to know your point of view on that question. Thank you.

Bernard Coyne. I think he was the tallest eunuchoidal giant. His bodyweight was around 222 pounds. I am not sure of his foot size, though an article that I read some time ago, suggested he had enormous feet.

In one of the pics of Ricki Covette-shown here-she stands in a doorway and is not quite so high as the door frame. The fact that she is wearing high high heels enforces your theory that 6 ft 4 without shoes could be about right.
A while ago after seeing that pic of Ricki - I did wonder if her billed height of 6 ft 8 was correct. But door frames can vary and some are higher than others
I reasoned with myself. So I dismissed those thoughts from my mind again.
The evidence you are presenting seems convincing. So doubts have crept in again. Tall peoples heights are very often exagerrated as we know.

In recent times some websites have downsized the height of Angus. Some people being of the opinion - based on photographic evidence that the height and chest measurement had been exaggerated. a strongman from Blyth - Northumberland - England. I lived in Blyth and Willy

I do not believe I have seen any references to Rosa Wedsted beyond 1907 either.
My interest in giants/giantesses began in the 1960s and it was in the 1980s when I first became aware of Rosa Wedsted. Since that time I have found out very little concerning her. It seems that there has been confusion between her
and Pauline Marriane Wehde as both have been mentioned as "Marian the Amazon Queen". One thing that has crossed my mind was that Pauline Marriane Wehde although billed at over 8 ft was supposed to have been measured by a physician
and was I believe 7 ft 4 1/2. The GBR mentioned this if I am not mistaken. In recent times a costume said to have been worn by her indicated that her true height may have been 7 ft 2. It had crossed my mind - was it possible that the costume had been the property of Rosa Wedsted as opposed to Pauline. I am not saying that I believe this to be true - though it is only a possible theory.
I do hope that more information on Rosa Wedsted will come to light. There are so many other individuals - where only scraps of data exist. I recently found a
photo of Ruth Duncan another person that I had only heard of.

Way back in the sixties a 10 feet tall negro boy attended our Illinois church services. Does anyone know his name or what happened to him?
That's probably Grady Patterson. He's from Kentucky and visited a church in Illinois. He wasn't anywhere near 10 feet tall though. Many here think he was 8 feet tall, but he had severe curvature of the spine. He could've been close to Wadlow's height if he had a normal spine. We haven't seen much pics of him but Johnny C has provided us with some medical files. If he's not a hoax he was the 2nd tallest man in medical history.

Without shoes but with assumed normal spinal curvature, I'm uncertain that Kosen would quite touch that 8 ft ceiling.

Were he able to straighten his posture from a documented standing height of 7 ft 11.28 inches (242.00 cm), I believe Zhang Jun-Cai would fractionally exceed the 8 ft mark.

There's also a brief clip of Xishun (just search exactly 'Xishun' on Youtube and you'll find it) playing basketball (it's near the end of the 4:22 clip). Xishun can pretty much dunk while standing flatfooted like Charbib. I suppose Charbib's standing reach is around 10,4" (based on that vid)

and yes I paused the vid at around 6:47 when he does the standing dunk, and took a transparent ruler and a calculator to set a ratio between the supposedly 7,9" Charbib and the rim...and found out that the rim is really regulation height! I gave Charbib the benefit of doubt in setting his height at 7-10 with shoes on...and he turns out to be 78.33 % of the rim's height thereby making the rim 10 feet!

Eunuchoidal gigantism is totally different from acromegalic gigantism. The Eunuchoidal variety will have either an average sized or small head - coupled with a short torso. The legs and arms will be very long. An acromegalic giant or giantess will often have an elongated face - sometimes with a lantern jaw and usually a very high forehead.

There is a marked difference - between these types of gigantism.

Kosen is the first man in almost 20 years to be verified at over 8 feet! The last eight footer was Nashnush who died in 1991.
He is 27 y.o., the same as John Carroll when this second photo on this page was taken--

mytg8: cheers, that's very helpful. When you look at one of the pictures, the nurse could well be Italian. As you see, MisterSil posts to say Nashnush was 7'7" when he had the Rome surgery. It would seem the radioactive implant didn't stop growth. I think we may at last understand why he looks less than 8' in the photos. Pity there aren't any later pictures! Perhaps Mask, the human bloodhound, will find one!

Although it's not 100% sure this is indeed Nashnush, I don't know who else it should be. Nashnush is credited of appearing in this movie, yet there are no scenes where a gigantic man appears, except at the end when the lead character fights a minotaur. But the actor who played the minotaur was a 6'9" actor, not Nashnush.
If the man in the video above is Nashnush, then I don't think he was over 8 feet tall. He has severe curvature of the spine and doesn't really come off as a extremely tall human being in that segment.

we always discuss about giants and their height waiting for someone taller and taller but I don't know what I would think of someone like me if I were a giant 8 foot tall and were not even able to walk! I wanted to quit a few time back then I came back only because one of you (don't remember who) said to me that through our sort of publicity we could have helped some giants to be known and receive help and treatments for their disease but now I seriously am not sure anymore to keep doing what I did until now!I'll take some time to look inside myself and then if you'll see me ok if not thank you everybody!

Yesterday Sultan Kosen was in my country to hand the Dutch version of Guinness Book of Records to 7'3" Rob Bruintjes (who according to the article is the tallest man in The Netherlands, which is not true). You can also see German shoemaker Georg Wessels in the pics.

Not sure if this has been discussed, but is anyone familiar with a Chinese man by the name of Chang Jiao-Tai? He supposedly lived in China around 17th-19th century and had an unconfirmed height of 288 cm. Robert Wadlow obviously has the highest confirmed height in history, but this intrigued me nevertheless.

Evidently several of you people are in the Netherlands. Do any of you know when Johann Albert Kramer ("Jan Van Albert") died? As he was born in 1897 he must be deceased by now, but I've never seen a date mentioned.
His date of death is unknown. All I know is he was still alive in 1958. Here are some pics of him in his own pub in Amsterdam in 1955.

Kramer is one of my all-time favorite giants. Perhaps because he seems happy and incredibly healthy. Biographical information is sadly lacking (possibly due to the fact that he had about six aliases). I also am unsure about his actual peak height. I've seen his height mentioned as anything between 7'8" and 9'2." I think he's 7'10" or perhaps a little more. I am 90% sure that he was not acromegalic. (look at his hands and feet in any picture). I first came across Ben Hicks in Gould and Pyles excellent Curiosities and Anomalies of Medicine - many years ago. Now you are right that the photos of Hicks and Cooper are the same man. This needs further investigation for sure.

The man wearing the Angel costume- with caption Bob Collins? He was William Olding a Glaswegian. This Scottish giant was 7 ft 6.5 - as far as I know he was born in 1914 and may have still been alive in the 1940s.
George Keiffer - sometimes called Georges Kieffer and other variations.
He was born in 1913 and died in 1947.

Henry Alexander Cooper - according to this article - weighed around 496 pounds.
The photograph which I am almost sure is not Cooper - but Ben Hicks does not look that heavy to me. I do not believe that other guy in the photo is 6 ft 4.
It would be good to see a photo of the real Cooper.

I'm Italian and soccer is our national sport and we are also world champions.In Italy a lot of people live with and for soccer really!
I played soccer as a child also and I've always known that the height of a regular soccer goal is exactly 8 feet though smaller sometimes for children.
Now if you look at the video and stop at 3:53 you can see Suparwono beeing at lest 4 inches shorter than the crossbar and as you can read up there in the other link I posted that a regular crossbar should stand at 8 feet from the ground!I'm not conviced at all about his height and given that he was measured by local authority as in Stadnyk case for example, I guess, I only guess, that he could be shorter than 7'11.5" but in any case no shorter than 7'7/8"!It could very well be also that the crossbar is higher than average but I don't think so!I'd like very much to know your point of view guys!

Sizonenko has lost height due to spinal curvature over the years and pictures with Alam Channa it was who was taller.
One can compare him with Sandy Allen. She also lost height due to spinal curvature.

At the end of her life she was a tad taller than 2.20 m.
That's why i believe Alexander Sizonenko ist maximal tall.

Aramx: That pic you posted of Sandy is from 2002 (for her book cover) when she was way past her peak height. You can see she's leaning on Kelly's shoulder and at that point could only stand for a short time, otherwise she was in a wheelchair. If you look at this gallery of pix, the one of me with Sandy in the I'M WITH SHORTY shirt, she was probably at her peak height then, in 1977. According to the Chicago Height Club, of which Koehler was a member, he was 7-7 in 1950 and didn't reach 8-2 until the early sixties. In the 1964 Guinness World Record book they listed his as 8-2.
So, this 1952 photo says he's 8-2? How did they know he'd reach that 12 years in the future? I'm beginning to wonder about the veracity of his and Guinness claim to be over 8 foot tall.

The pic of Koehler I posted with David Frost obviously didn't ACCURATELY show how tall he really was because he was obviously standing further from the camera than 6 foot David Frost. But it was obvious he was easily 2 feet taller if you take that into consideration.

According to several sources - including this one - on TheTallestMan.com Vainno Myllrinne did have a second phase of growth in his late thirties. I believe that Guinness mentioned this in some editions. Regardless of that we know he reached 8 ft 3 and must have been a tremendous poundage by then.

The poundage for Koehler was listed in an old edition of Guinness. Other sources also gave that as his approximate weight. Don also had a twin sister -

On 1988/1989/1990 editions of guinness book of records there are more detailed informations about Mulia. In the book they say that she was born in 1956 and was from an South Kalimantan in Borneo. She came to public attention because of her height and she was flown to a hospital in Surabaja, Java, Indonesia in april 1986 for an operation to check her exceptional growth. When she married at 13 she was a normal woman, she measured 155 cm and weighed 40 kg. At the hospital she recorded a length of 233 cm or 7'7.75" which, allowing for some elongation, indicated a standing height of c. 228,6 cm or 7'6". her weight was 77 kg at that time. Since then there has been no further news about her and it is therefore not known if the operation was successful.

Trust me that picture of Gilbert is not an Afro American at all. It is a showbiz gaff. It is one of the Shields brothers blacked up. I read all about it in this book.

If it was a show-biz gaff - it was a heck of a long one and extraordinarily elaborate. Perhaps Bogdan was wrong? James G. I read the Bogdan book about 3 years ago. The author claimed that James G. Gilbert was a very elaborate hoax. He mentions that the Shields brothers were
recruited and groomed as professional giants. Also he speaks of one of the brothers (probably Shadrack "Shade Shields") who appeared as Gilbert. Also the
photographs featured on the Tom Hernandez site are included in the book. I have also heard it said that there were four real Shields brothers. But sometimes one of them was not available and another tall guy would stand in for him.

According to the Bogdan Book and various other sources Shade Shields was supposed to have married Christiana Dororhea Dunz. Otherwise Annie O'Brien and was also known to be called Ruth Shields. However whether they divorced or whether it was just a showbiz stunt I am not sure. It seems like she was married to him - but later was supposed to have married Patrick Murphy - who was really George Parsons and may have been the man on photo of unknown giant

But years ago I read a book about the showman David Prince Miller. At one time he had in his employ a 7 feet tall giantess - who was not named. She left the show - but left some of her clothes behind. Miller himself was said to have blacked himself up and wearing a costume of hers and standing on a chair - passed himself off as the giantess. This gaff was supposed to have worked. It crossed my mind - who was the real giantess. Maybe it was Abomah. The time period and height seem to be about right.

Regarding Annelies(Annie) Haase-Kaatje van Dyk. Would just like to draw your attention to one of the photos displayed on your site-which may not be her.
In this case - whilst I am not certain - but the same picture is displayed on
Tom Hernandez site as Londy. As you know a famous Giantess from Germany.

Londy is another - who is a bit of an enigma. Generally known as Eleanor Wagner
but sometimes as Eleanor Laura Wagner and has been called Laura Wagner.
Sometimes the spelling varies and has been Waigener or Waginer. In the early days she was marketed as a Vienesse but later became known as Londy and Miss Londy. Because she spent a long spell at Dreamland in Coney Island - she became known as The Dreamland Giantess but was sometimes promoted as The Wonderful
Giantess. She was billed at 8 ft but one postcard of her at 19 years of age was marked on the back 7 ft 1. 280 pounds. One later postcard said 7 ft 4 and 336 pounds. I am not certain of her exact height - but the weights given are probably about right. Shortly before britain declared war on Germany - I think
it would be 1938. Londy was appearing in Britain with The Bertram Mills Circus.
She appeared at the famous Olympia in London and several other places. After
that time. I have not came across any more references to her so far. I wonder
if she returned to her native land during the war. Other than Londy another
famous tall lady who appeared at Dreamland was Dora Helms. Another thing about
Dora. I read a book about Frederick Kempster - in which it tells you that he met and fell in love with a German tall lady called Brunhilde. That would have
have to be Dora. However the outbreak of World War One put paid to their liason.

This is a pretty interesting recent vid (one of the few made from this year) of Sultan Kosen. It states that Kosen was actually measured at 243 cm in NY in public! So that refutes anyone who actually says he was measured 8'1" there!
